Spirulina in cosmetic care
Did you know that… spirulina can be used for cosmetic care?
Spirulina is most often used as a food or dietary supplement, for internal use. But did you know that it can also be used externally, directly on the skin or hair?
An ally for the skin
Spirulina can be used as a mask on the skin, combined with a few other natural ingredients. Thanks to its purifying and antioxidant properties, spirulina brings together all the nutrients and trace elements the skin needs to be firm, smooth and supple! Purifying and detoxifying, it is also very effective in combating acne problems and significantly reduces blemishes.
What’s more, spirulina is a genuine anti-ageing treatment. In particular, it contains one of the most powerful antioxidants known to date, phycocyanin, the pigment responsible for its blue-green colour.

An asset for the hair
Spirulina can also be applied directly to the hair in the form of shampoos or masks. Its benefits are numerous: spirulina’s exceptional richness in protein and iron helps the body to produce keratin, the basic substance that makes up the hair. The hair is thus strengthened and grows faster. Its antioxidant properties help to delay hair loss, the development of dandruff and the appearance of grey hair by stimulating cell renewal at the level of the scalp. The hair is therefore more beautiful and stronger.
How to make your own homemade spirulina-based cosmetics?
Natural cosmetics brands quickly understood the advantages and benefits of adding spirulina to their face creams or shampoos. You can therefore find spirulina-based products directly on the market.
However, we encourage you to create your own face or hair masks, because spirulina-based recipes are numerous and easy. You will just need to make sure to blend the Plein’R Spiruline-Valais flakes so as to incorporate the powder more easily into your preparation.
Here are two hair mask recipes that we have tested for you.
A few ingredients from your cupboards, 5 minutes of preparation, and there you go!
Mask for damaged and dull hair
In a bowl, mix:
- 1 tablespoon of plain yoghurt
- 1 level tablespoon of spirulina powder
- 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel (optional)
- 1 tablespoon of liquid honey or agave syrup
Whisk the preparation well to obtain a blue-green foam. Don’t worry, it doesn’t colour the hair, but be careful — it can stain fabrics. Gently spread it over your head and hair using the spoon or a brush. Then leave it on for one hour under a towel that you don’t mind staining. Then rinse with water and wash with your usual shampoo.
Ultra-nourishing mask for dry or curly hair
In a bowl, mix:
- 4 tablespoons of coconut oil or coconut cream
- 1 tablespoon of spirulina powder
- 1 teaspoon of castor oil
- ½ avocado (optional)
If you add the avocado, use a blender for a smoother texture. Apply the preparation to your entire head of hair, then leave it on for one hour under a towel that you don’t mind staining. Then rinse with water and wash with your usual shampoo.
Our tip : these spirulina masks should be done twice a month, so as not to tire the scalp. The rest of the time, wash your hair with a neutral or mild shampoo and take care of your diet.
