Nutrition then becomes a central concern: what should you eat to get through these nine months as calmly as possible — a period during which the body is put to the test while a tiny being takes shape within it? At first, we tend to focus on what has become off-limits, but we mustn’t overlook the foods that are advised, or even recommended, for a healthy pregnancy, for both mother and baby. This is the case with superfoods, which are your allies at all times, and even more so during pregnancy.

Super what? Superfoods.

100% natural foods with incomparable nutritional value. Even if you’ve never heard of them, you already know some: raspberries, cranberries and blueberries are examples of fruits considered to be superfoods. This category also includes certain nuts, such as walnuts, and seeds like chia or flax. But here we’re going to focus on one superfood in particular: spirulina. This little blue-green alga still has plenty of surprises in store and offers many benefits for pregnant women. Let’s take a closer look…

What is spirulina?

Spirulina is a blue-green alga a few dozen millimetres long that grows by cell division. It appeared alongside the very first living organisms, more than 3.5 billion years ago. It is found in certain natural environments of warm, brackish water, such as Lake Chad in Africa. But for the most part, it is cultivated by humans in aquaculture ponds. For some years now, it has also been grown in Switzerland and particularly in Valais, whose sunshine is ideal for this type of cultivation.

Spirulina is often described as “the richest and most complete food in the world after breast milk” by the WHO since 2015. It is an essential food in vegetarian diets, as it is made up of 65% protein and is very rich in iron. It is sold in shops in various forms: as a powder, in tablets, or as flakes.

3 benefits of spirulina during pregnancy

Spirulina is such a nutrient-rich food that its benefits are numerous. During pregnancy, an expectant mother’s nutritional needs are specific, and here we are going to focus in particular on three benefits of spirulina for a pregnant woman’s body: its supply of iron, vitamins and protein.

Iron

From the very start of pregnancy, an expectant mother’s iron levels are closely monitored. A deficiency, or even anaemia, could have unfortunate consequences for the woman (fatigue, weakness, etc.) as well as for her baby, whose cells and tissues are forming day after day. A pregnant woman is considered an at-risk individual, and as soon as her iron level drops slightly, iron supplements are prescribed.

First, spirulina naturally has a high iron content. Second, since our spirulina belongs to the bacteria kingdom, the iron it contains is generally considered to be well absorbed by the body. Its single-membrane structure makes it easy to digest, which allows the body to absorb some of its nutrients more easily.

Vitamins

Vitamins are organic compounds essential to life. With the exception of vitamin D, which is produced by the skin under the effect of ultraviolet rays, the body is unable to produce vitamins. They must therefore be obtained through a balanced diet, rich in fruit and vegetables.

Some vitamins are especially important during pregnancy and need to be stored in large amounts. Vitamin A acts on the mother-to-be’s immune system as well as on the cell growth of the foetus. During pregnancy, the body draws heavily on its vitamin A reserves, which frequently leads to deficiencies. Vitamin B9, also known as folic acid, contributes to the healthy development of the foetus, particularly in early pregnancy. It is essential, and folic acid supplementation is systematically recommended to prevent certain malformations. It also plays a role in iron metabolism. Iron and vitamin B9 deficiencies are, moreover, very often linked. Vitamin B12 acts on the neurological development of the foetus, and in the event of a deficiency, the pregnant woman experiences unpleasant symptoms: skin and hair problems, fatigue, constipation, and so on.

Spirulina is rich in vitamins A, B9 and B12. A teaspoon can contribute to your intake of vitamins A and B9. Spirulina also contains a significant amount of vitamin B12. However, it should be noted that in this form, vitamin B12 is not always well absorbed by the body, so it is recommended to have other sources of vitamin B12, such as animal-based foods or dietary supplements.

Protein

Proteins are the building blocks of our body. They act at many levels. Among other things, they contribute to the healthy growth of our muscles, tissues and organs, and are involved in the formation of antibodies, hormones and enzymes.

Proteins are made up of amino acids. There are around twenty of them, all essential to our body. Twelve are produced by the body itself; the others must necessarily be supplied through diet. These are called “essential amino acids.” Essential amino acids are in especially high demand during pregnancy, both for the mother-to-be and for the baby. That is why, in addition to ensuring a sufficient protein intake, pregnant women are advised to be mindful about eating foods containing essential amino acids, in order to avoid deficiencies during pregnancy.

Good news: spirulina is made up of 65% plant-based protein and contains all these essential amino acids that our body needs so much. A natural way to help meet your essential amino acid needs all at once!

What about taking spirulina while breastfeeding?

When it comes to breastfeeding, the same applies: spirulina poses no danger, either to the mother or to the child. It provides the mother with iron, vitamins and protein — nutrients that are useful during the breastfeeding period, which often goes hand in hand with deficiencies and fatigue.

Spirulina is therefore a valuable ally for a mother and her baby-to-be, whether during pregnancy or during breastfeeding. And why not both?!

How to choose and consume your spirulina?

Spirulina can take different forms: tablets, flakes or powder. It’s up to you to choose what suits you best during your pregnancy!

The Plein’R spirulina is sold as flakes that can easily be added to your meals and bring a bit of crunch to your dishes: in salads, in muesli, on a slice of bread, and so on. A daily teaspoon of Plein’R spirulina can help provide many nutrients during pregnancy, as explained above.

What’s more, when spirulina is produced “in flakes,” drying does not exceed 42 degrees Celsius. This corresponds to cold drying, which optimally preserves the nutrients and antioxidants present in spirulina. The quality is therefore superior to that of powdered or tablet spirulina.

Plein’R spirulina is grown in Switzerland, in Valais, and has the advantage of being 100% natural. Spirulina has the particular feature of being an aquaculture product. Some spirulina — even organic — that comes from abroad, notably from China or India, can be contaminated with heavy metals, which pose a danger to anyone, but even more so to a pregnant woman and her baby. It is therefore essential to source spirulina from a controlled supply chain, preferably local, offering every health guarantee.

Are there any contraindications to taking spirulina during pregnancy?

If the spirulina is of good quality and the daily amount (one teaspoon / 5 g) is respected, spirulina poses no danger during pregnancy. However, if you have a particular medical condition — in particular an abnormal excess of iron in the blood — you should always seek your doctor’s advice before taking any dietary supplement.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”@ET-DC@eyJkeW5hbWljIjp0cnVlLCJjb250ZW50IjoicG9zdF9saW5rX3VybF9wYWdlIiwic2V0dGluZ3MiOnsicG9zdF9pZCI6IjQxMTgxIn19@” button_text=”Buy spirulina” button_alignment=”left” button_alignment_tablet=”center” button_alignment_phone=”center” button_alignment_last_edited=”on|phone” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _dynamic_attributes=”button_url” custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”16px” button_text_color=”#FFFFFF” button_bg_color=”#8cd7c5″ button_border_radius=”0px” button_letter_spacing=”2px” button_font=”|600||on|||||” button_use_icon=”off” transform_scale_tablet=”” transform_scale_phone=”” transform_scale_last_edited=”on|phone” transform_translate_tablet=”” transform_translate_phone=”” transform_translate_last_edited=”on|phone” transform_rotate_tablet=”” transform_rotate_phone=”” transform_rotate_last_edited=”on|phone” transform_skew_tablet=”” transform_skew_phone=”” transform_skew_last_edited=”on|phone” transform_origin_tablet=”” transform_origin_phone=”” transform_origin_last_edited=”on|phone” background_layout=”dark” custom_margin=”|||12px|false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”” custom_margin_phone=”-4px||0px|0px|false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”10px|25px|10px|25px|false|true” custom_padding_tablet=”” custom_padding_phone=”5px|5px|5px|5px|true|true” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” animation_style=”slide” animation_direction=”left” animation_intensity_slide=”10%” button_text_size_tablet=”” button_text_size_phone=”14px” button_text_size_last_edited=”on|phone” box_shadow_style=”preset4″ box_shadow_horizontal=”-10px” box_shadow_vertical=”0px” box_shadow_color=”#000000″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” button_bg_color__hover_enabled=”on|desktop” button_bg_color__hover=”#14967f” button_bg_enable_color__hover=”on” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_button][et_pb_image src=”https://spiruline-valais.ch/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/spiruline-pendant-la-grossesse-scaled.jpg” alt=”Spirulina during pregnancy” title_text=”spirulina-during-pregnancy” align=”center” force_fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”100px||||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”100px||||false|false” custom_margin_phone=”50px||||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

3 benefits of spirulina during pregnancyDuring pregnancy, a woman’s body goes through a great many changes.
